Etymology: Triplophos: Greek, triplos = three + Greek, phos = light.
Eponymy: Captain Thomas Henry Heming RN (d: 1856) was (1898–1907) Commander, Royal Indian Marine Survey Steamer ‘Investigator’ from which the holotype was collected. He carried out soundings in the Humber estuary (1909). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 0; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 10 - 12; Anale stekels: 0; Anale zachte stralen: 53 - 67. Yellowish-brown in color, black on head and abdomen, fins colorless (Ref. 3991). Short trunk, long tail, anterior dorsal fin and short toothed of the maxillary (Ref. 37473).
Body shape (shape guide): eel-like.
