Etymology: Acanthocepola: Greek, akantha = thorn + Latin, cepulla, cepa = onion.
Eponymy: Adam Johann von Krusenstern (1770–1846) was a Russian (born in what is now Estonia) admiral and explorer who led the first (1803–1806) Russian circumnavigation of the globe. His work won him an honorary membership in the Russian Academy of Sciences. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Inhabits the shallowest water, compared to other cepolids. Lives on muddy substrates, deep as well as in shallow protected estuaries (Ref. 48635). Caught by dredge, but not valued as food fish (Ref. 559, 637).
