It is a large species with distinct pigmentation on its fins and body. The flanks above the lateral line is greenish-blue that sometimes has a pale mustard yellow undertone. Small pigmented dots, ranging from moderate to abundant, are present on the scales along the flanks and dorsum. The species is deep-bodied, a blunt snout, a short head, a sub-terminal mouth, and small eyes set within a thick, triangular-shaped socket. Its caudal peduncle is short and robust, and it has relatively few, short gill rakers.
