Etymology: Plectranthias: Greek, plektron = anyhting to strike with, spur + Greek, anthias = a fish, Sparus aurata (Ref. 45335); takasei: Named for Mr Wataru Takase, who collected the holotype.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 10; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 15; Anale stekels: 3; Anale zachte stralen: 7; Wervels: 26. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: D X,5, fourth dorsal-fin spine longest and no fleshy flaps on dorsal-fin spines; pectoral rays 13, all unbranched; branched caudal-fin rays 8 + 7; lateral line scales 28 (including intermittent and terminal pitted scales); circumpeduncular scales 12; preopercle without antrorse spines or serrations ventrally, with 2–3 weak serrations or crenulations posteriorly (Ref. 117635).
