Etymology: Macrhybopsis: Greek, makros = great + Greek, ybos, -e, -on = rounded + Greek, opsis = appearance (Ref. 45335); etnieri: Named after Dr. David A. Etnier, Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of Tennessee, for his many contributions to southeastern ichthyology and aquatic biology, including co-authorship of the definitive book on the fishes of Tennessee.
Eponymy: Dr David A Etnier (d: 1937) is Emeritus Professor of Zoology at the University of Tennessee which houses the ‘Etnier Ichthyological Collection’ of over 40,000 specimens that he began (1960s). [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
