Etymology: Parosphromenus: Greek, para in the side of + Greek, osphromenos, osphrainomai = to smell (Ref. 45335)alfredi: Named for Eric Alfred, whose work on Malayan fishes has been most useful in recent studies.

Taggstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 12 - 14; Mjukstrålar i ryggfenan (totalt) : 5 - 6; Taggstrålar i analfenan: 11 - 13; Mjukstrålar i analfenan: 8 - 10. Differs from its congeners by the following unique combination of characters: 12-13 spines in dorsal fin; 11-13 spines in anal fin; 8-10 segmented rays in anal fin; in live males, dorsal, anal and caudal fins with a narrow bluish margin and a black subdistal band bordered proximally by a bluish iridescent band, sometimes turning to reddish posteriorly; proximal part of dorsal and anal fins from dark red to black; proximal part of caudal fin red, darker in basal area; pelvic fin blue, with white filament (Ref. 56232).
