Etymology: Brachyrhaphis: Greek, brachys, eia = short + Greek, raphis = needle (Ref. 45335); hessfeldi: Named in honor of Mr. Gerhard Hessfeld of Hamm, Germany (Ref. 42985).
Eponymy: Gerhard Hessfeld is a German aquarist based in Hamm. He helped collect the type specimen in Panama. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
