Prefers rocky areas. Mostly found near very large boulders, but in shallow water large schools congregate at rocky islets on the sand. Feeds on plankton (Ref. 5595).

Males defend spawning sites on large boulders and spawn along the vertical face of the boulder or construct a small bower of find sand on top of the boulder. Female mouth brooder, ca. 60 eggs (Ref. 2060).
