背棘 (總數) : 15 - 17; 背的軟條 (總數) : 9 - 12; 臀棘: 3; 臀鰭軟條: 9 - 10; 脊椎骨: 30. Distinguished from P. kirkii by the narrow preorbital bone, shorter, steeper snout and smaller mouth with, usually, fewer teeth.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
與 P. kirkii 區分了藉由狹窄的眶前骨, 比較短的, 浸潤用的桶子吻與比較小的通常嘴部具有較少的齒。
Usually found in relatively shallow water (Ref. 267). Feeds on small snails and invertebrates found on the vegetation (Ref. 5595).
