Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817).

Diagnosis: Garra ignestii is distinguished from African congeners by the following combination of features: extremely well-developed, large papillate disc; scaled predorsal and postpelvic regions; chest and belly asquamate; vent located close to anal fin; and intestine long (Ref. 58532).
