Resembles S. japonicus and S. analis but distinguished by the following characters: pelvic spine with distinct serration on the anterior edge; 2 spines and 7 soft rays in anal fin; 16 rays in pectoral fin; and small body size (less than 10 cm). Body blackish -brown dorsally, paler ventrally.

與 S. japonicus 與 S. analis 相似但是藉著下列的特徵區別了: 腹棘在前緣上有明顯的鋸齒; 在臀鰭中的 2根棘與 7個軟鰭條; 在胸鰭的 16個鰭條; 而且小的身體大小.(少於 10 公分) 身體黑色的 -褐色背面, 腹側灰白的。
