Etymology: Petrocephalus: Latin, petra = stone + Greek, kephale = head (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Baron Alphonse de Haulleville (1860–1938) was the Director (1910–1927) of the Musée du Congo Belge at Tervuren (RMCA). As such he would have been well known to Boulenger who was at BMNH, having moved there from Belgium (1890). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Africa: Kouilou-Niari (Ref. 53765) and Chiloango River basins (Ref. 41597). Report from the Ubangi River (middle Congo River basin) (Ref. 94857) questionable and needs confirmation. Presence in some swamps and minor tributaries of the Congo River estuary tentatively confirmed (Ref. 12818).

Petrocephalus haullevillii is distinguished from P. congicus by the absence of a rosette of electroreceptor organs above the eye (Ref. 91771). Teeth bicuspid, 11-14 in upper jaw and 16-18 in lower jaw (Ref. 41597).
