Etymology: Pariolius: Greek, pareia = jaw + Greek, leios = smooth (Ref. 45335); pax: Name 'pax from the Latin noun meaning 'peace' in honor of the Colombian peace process signed in 2012 that allowed access to the type locality of the species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: very faint cream bar (collar) or homogeneus coloration of the nuchal region; 6 branched caudal-fin rays on dorsal lobe; light brown in life, light rosy in life; deep body (13.3-17.0% SL vs. 9.5-13.2% SL), deep head at supraoccipital 48.0-51.5% SL; deep head at interorbital 34.5-43.5% SL; short preadipose distance 70.2-73.3% SL; deep adipose fin 3.1-4.6% SL; large eye 8.5-11.5% SL; and wide internostril distance 9.5-11.5% SL (Ref. 132479).
