Etymology: Cambeva: Probably derived from the Tupi-Guarani, is a popular name for trichomycterid fishes in southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ref. 119381); piraquara: Name 'piraquara from an indigenous Tupi language word 'pirá' and 'kûara', meaning 'fish' and 'hole'. It is also in reference to the type locality of the species, Piraquara River. A noun in apposition.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: conspicuous wide and well-defined dark-brown longitudinal mid-lateral stripe on the inner skin layer over a plain yellowish background, extending from the opercular patch of odontodes to the first third of caudal-fin rays; and presence of dorso-sagittal line on the inner skin layer of large irregular circular blotches coalescing and forming a longitudinal stripe from occipital region to the base of dorsal fin (Ref. 137783).
