Etymology: Gymnoscopelus: Greek, gymnos = naked + Greek, skopelos, a lantern fish (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Captain Hugh Fraser collected the holotype with a net of his own construction. We have not been able to further identify this person. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Ecology
Marine; bathypelagic; oceanodromous (Ref. 51243); depth range 50 - 250 m (Ref. 45488). Deep-water; 2°C - 8°C (Ref. 5182); 45°S - 68°S, 62°E - 179°E
Mostly in the region of Antarctic Polar Front, but northwards to Subtropical Convergence in Falkland Current region and at 45°E.

Oceanic and mesopelagic (Ref. 4066). Found in the upper 100 m at night.
