Etymology: Stellifer: Latin, stella = satr + latin, fero = to carry (Ref. 45335)macallisteri: Named for Dr. Don E. McAllister, formerly of the National Museum of Natural History, Ottawa, Canada.
Eponymy: Dr Donald Evan McAllister (1934–2001) was a Canadian ichthyologist. He was appointed (1958) as Curator of Fishes, National Museum of Canada, and massively increased the museum’s ichthyological collection. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Épines dorsales (Total) : 11; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 23 - 24; Épines anales: 2; Rayons mous anaux: 6 - 8. This species is distinguished from all its congeners in the Atlantic by the following set of characters: a terminal and slightly oblique mouth; D1 XI; lack of diverticula on anterior chamber of gas bladder; differs from other species that lack diverticula: from S. punctatissimus which has a deeper body and a subterminal to inferior mouth, from S. menezesi with an elongated body and an inferior mouth, and from S. gomezi which has a more elongated body and a subterminal to inferior mouth (Ref. 125562).
