Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; filamentosa: Name from Latin 'filum' for thread, referring to the thread-like first dorsal-fin spine; a feminine singular adjective in the nominative case.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: cephalic sensory-pore system lacking F’ (AOT), G (IT) pore and preopercular-canal pores N’ & O’ (POP) pores; (Pattern 2); dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 8/8; pectoral-fin rays are branched; absence of the fifth pelvic-fin ray; genital papilla is neither fimbriate nor cup-shaped; lateral scales 19-21 (Ref. 96643).
