Etymology: Thoracochromis: Greek, thorax, -akos = cuiras, shell + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).

Freshwater; demersal. Tropical; 25°C - 27°C (Ref. 13614); 2°S - 5°S
Africa: endemic to the Fwa River (Sankuru River, Kasai drainage, middle Congo River basin) in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 13455, 52307, 82322).

Mainly feeds on plants (e.g. Vallisneria aethiopica) but also on algae and detritus; ovophilic, agamous, maternal mouthbrooder (Ref. 52307).
