Etymology: fieldi: Named for Richard Field, who first suspected that the Indian Ocean population of Chromis dimidiata might represent a different species.

Inhabits coral reefs, both lagoon and outer reefs, but not in areas exposed to heavy wave action, at depths of 1 to at least 40 m. Feeds on zooplankton, but rarely more than a meter above the shelter of the reef (Ref. 92902).
