Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 8; Vertebrae: 24. This species is distinguished by the following characters: body with numerous, small dark spots (brownish in alcohol); below the eye is a broad darkish cheek mark; from the eye to beginning of opercle, a darkish mark; smooth to slightly crenulate ventral margin of preopercle; 8 gill rakers on the first arch, well-developed; pectoral-fin rays 17; D VII(I) - I, 9; stomach, intestine, and peritoneum pale (Ref. 78367).
