Etymology: Mastacembelus: Greek, mastax, -agos = bite + Greek, emballo = to throw oneself (Ref. 45335); pantherinus: Derived from the Greek panther (leopard), and inspired by the numerous spots on the body of this species.

Épines dorsales (Total) : 37 - 40; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total) : 82 - 92; Épines anales: 3; Rayons mous anaux: 79 - 81; Vertèbres: 97 - 100. Differs from all congeners by having a unique color pattern consisting of numerous individual spots or irregular marks, sometimes forming short lines and a whitish belly devoid of any marks. Can be separated from members of the Mastacembelus armatus group by the possession of abdominal vertebrae 42-44 (Ref. 78150).
