Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817).

Espinas dorsales (total) : 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 10 - 11; Espinas anales: 0; Radios blandos anales: 8 - 9. Diagnosis: Garra aethiopica is distinguished from African congeners by the following combination of features: intermediate disc; scaled predorsal, belly and postpelvic regions; either smooth or weakly invecked ventral margin to rostral cap; and pale ash-grey markings in both fresh and preserved specimens (Ref. 58532).
