Etymology: Apionichthys: Greek, apion = pear + Greek, ichthys = fish; it also exists "a-pion", no fatty (Ref. 45335)seripierriae: Named after Dione Seripierri, head Librarian at Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo.
Eponymy: Dione Seripierri is head librarian at Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo. She co-wrote: The Entomological Collection of Ricardo von Diringshofen (1900–1986) and its incorporation to the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo (2016). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 69 - 78; Raggi anali molli: 51 - 58; Vertebre: 39 - 40. Uniformly brown background coloration without blotches and 6 dark, very narrow stripes along trunk, 3 stripes above and 3 below lateral line; scale margins are also darker than in other congeneric species; elongate body shape, small eye (5-6% HL) and a wide, variable interorbital space (200-300% of eye); absence of scales on the interorbital space and presence of a gill opening on both sides of the head (Ref. 49504).
