Etymology: Gymnogobius: Greek, gymnos = naked + Latin, gobius = gudgeon (Ref. 45335).
Issue
Nomen dubium, whereabouts of the 2 syntypes collected at Chefoo , Yellow Sea coast, are currently unknown:, most likely a synonym of G. mororanus, for its characteristics seem to fit this species (and also of . G.heptacanthus) (Ref. 81467).
