Etymology: Badis: 'badis' is presumably a Bengali local name, possibly derived from 'bhedo' or 'bheda', but it lacks a proper reference. Probably incorrect etymology (J. Müller, pers. comm., April 2021, after information from native speakers); chittagongis: Named for its type locality, Chittagong Hills, an adjective with alternative endings -is, -e.

背棘 (總數) : 16 - 18; 背的軟條 (總數) : 9 - 11; 臀鰭軟條: 6 - 9; 脊椎骨: 28 - 29. Possesses a conspicuous dark blotch covering superficial part of cleithrum above the pectoral fin base; absence of a dark blotch on its dorsolateral aspect of caudal peduncle. Body depth 29.8-34.0%SL; interorbital width 5.5-6.7%SL.
A series of prominent dark blotches present along middle of dorsal fin. Distal extrascapular present.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
