Etymology: Acanthaphritis: Greek, akantha = thorn + Greek, phritto, phisso, to bristle (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Keijiro Ozawa was Captain of the Umitaka Maru, the vessel from which the holotype was taken (1969). Ozawa donated the type, along with other fishes, to the Western Australian Museum. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
