Readily distinguishable in life from all other species of the genus in eastern Brazilian coastal rivers by the unique brightly red colored dorsal, adipose, caudal and anal fins. Differs from all other species of eastern coastal Brazilian Brycon by having the fifth infraorbital bone longer than wide and a great maximum body depth (31.7-37.5% SL). Differs from B. ferox, the only other member of the genus occurring in the Rio Mucuri, by having 11 or 12 scales between lateral line and the dorsal fin, and by a different color pattern (Ref. 38873).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
