Etymology: Periophthalmus: Greek, peri = around + Greek, ophthalmos = eye (Ref. 45335); spilotus: Named for the small, brilliant whitish blue spots on the head and body.

Espinas dorsales (total) : 9 - 11; Radios blandos dorsales (total) : 13 - 14; Espinas anales: 1; Radios blandos anales: 12 - 14; Vértebra: 26. Pelvic fins totally united into rounded disk. First dorsal high, greyish; spots and elongate spines absent; when appressed reaching D2 origin. Second dorsal with dusky stripe mesially; whitish spots medial to this stripe. Caudal fin blackish medially. Anal fin translucent, spots and stripes absent (Ref. 35996).
