Etymology: Ophioscion: Greek, ophis = serpent + Greek, skion, skiaina = barbel, red mullet (Ref. 45335).

This species is synonym of Stellifer microps (Steindachner, 1864) in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. May 2011: Ref. 86870) following Chao (1978). Please send references, or more studies are needed.
