Etymology: Crenicichla: Latin, crenulatus = cut, clipped + Greek, kichle = wrasse (Ref. 45335); hemera: From the Greek hemeros (tame), in reference to the docile behavior of the type series when collected.

Ραχιαίες άκανθες (συνολικά) : 19 - 21; Μαλακές ραχιαίες ακτίνες (συνολικά) : 13 - 14; Εδρικές άκανθες: 3; Μαλακές εδρικές ακτίνες: 9 - 12; Σπόνδυλοι: 35. Easily distinguished from all other species of the genus by having a row of dark blotches forming a more or less continuous band along the abdominal side, and by having infraorbitals 3 and 4 co-ossified instead of separate. Differs from most Crenicichla species in having a smooth-margined instead of serrated preopercle (Ref. 26677).
