背棘 (總數) : 19 - 21; 背的軟條 (總數) : 13 - 14; 臀棘: 3; 臀鰭軟條: 9 - 12; 脊椎骨: 35. Easily distinguished from all other species of the genus by having a row of dark blotches forming a more or less continuous band along the abdominal side, and by having infraorbitals 3 and 4 co-ossified instead of separate. Differs from most Crenicichla species in having a smooth-margined instead of serrated preopercle (Ref. 26677).
