Etymology: Bujurquina: A name created by Kullander, taken from a native Peruvian word for these cichlids, "bujurqui" or "bufurque"; 1983-1986.
Eponymy: Brother Apolinar María (1867–1949) was a missionary monk and ornithologist who collected in Colombia. He was Director of the Institute La Salle in Bogota (1914). (See also Maria) (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
