Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); chlorobranchium: From the words chloro, meaning green; and branchium, fin (Ref. 10294).

North America: occurs only in the upper Tennessee River drainage from Watauga River to Hiwassee River systems in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, USA.
