Etymology: Notropis: A misnomer given by Rafinesque to shriveled specimens, with the meaning of "back keel"; from Greek, noton = back (Ref. 45335); potteri: Named for the first collector, naturalist Dr. George E. Potter of Baylor University and Texas A&M University (Ref. 79012).
