Presence of 2 dark saddles on body, at dorsal fin origin and under adipose fin; rest of body usually covered by irregular spots and blotches; distally expanded neural spines, forming a row of low bumps (each with an elongate tubercle) between dorsal and adipose fins; anal fin origin in front of adipose origin (Ref. 43281).
Body shape (shape guide): elongated.
Usually found in foot-hill streams (Ref. 43281). Occurs under rocks and logs in fairly strong currents in medium and large-sized rivers. Feeds on aquatic insect larvae. Not seen in the markets (Ref. 12693).
