Etymology: Goniistius: Name from the Greek -gon for angled and 'istion' for sail; referring to the oblique bars found on many species.

Eponymy: Yves Plessis (1921–1989) was a French naturalist who collected a specimen of the morwong on Rapa, French Polynesia. and realised it was an undescribed taxon. Plessis visited the island as part of a multi-disciplinary scientific mission. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
