Etymology: Myloplus: Greek, mylos, -ou = grey mullet + Greek, plus, ploos = movement of a serpent.

Issue
The locality Surinam mentioned by Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes 1850: 214 is doubtful. No specimen from Guyanas was seen in collections.
