Etymology: Cambeva: Probably derived from the Tupi-Guarani, is a popular name for trichomycterid fishes in southern and south-eastern Brazil (Ref. 119381); damnata: Name 'damnata' from the Latin word meaning 'condemned', in reference to the risks that the species faces with the plans for mining activities at the Serra do Curral and urban expansion.

Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 5; Vertebrae: 35 - 36. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: prominent adipose-like skin crest present on the dorsal margin of the caudal peduncle; an interrupted supraorbital canal; small premaxilla, smaller than the maxilla, with an accentuated constriction on its lateral portion; interopercular odontodes 37-44; minute pectoral-fin filament, about 10 % of the pectoral-fin length or less; dorsal-fin origin at the vertical through the centrum of the 16th vertebra; spotted colour pattern; pectoral fin 15.1-17.7 % SL; slender body, more conspicuous in specimens between about 45 and 50 mm SL; no sexual dimorphism in colour pattern (Ref. 137707).
