Distribution: across tropical and subtropical seas worldwide, from shallow reefs to deep seas at depths around 650 m (Nielsen et al., 1999).
Diagnosis: The main diagnostic character for the Brotulidae from other ophiidioid families is barbels present on the snout and chin. Others follow Cuvier (1829) and Nielsen et al. (1999): Body completely covered with small, imbricate, cycloid scales; eight branchiostegal rays; median basibranchial tooth patch absent; four or fewer developed gill rakers; and pelvic fin with two rays in each inserted at about the level of preopercle. |
