Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Vertebrae: 38 - 41. Diagnosed from its congeners by the possession of the following characters: lips markedly thickened laterally, groove behind upper lop interrupted in middle; upper jaw not protrusible; 80- 100 pored lateral line scales in adults; 100-110 total scales in midlateral row; scales deeply embedded in skin; skin conspicuously thickened in adults, especially during spawning season when most scales become indistinct (they are relatively distinct in juveniles and small adults outside spawning season); scales narrowly to widely spaced, covering whole body; 19-26½ scale rows between lateral line and dorsal origin (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

Inhabits streams with clear water and enters subterranean waters and caves (Ref. 59043). Reported to occur in lakes and lowland water courses, with little current (Ref. 26100). Threatened due to pollution and habitat destruction (Ref. 26100).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5625   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.01000 (0.00434 - 0.02305), b=3.02 (2.81 - 3.23), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this (Sub)family-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.9   ±0.1 se; based on size and trophs of closest relatives
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (Preliminary K or Fecundity.).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (10 of 100).
