Etymology: Bryconamericus: Greek, bryko = to bite + America, latinized (Ref. 45335)bucayensis: Nmed for the Rio Bucaya, where the type series was collected.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Vertebrae: 37 - 38. This species differs from all its congeners by having 7-8 scales between the lateral line and the pelvic-fin insertions (vs. 2-7, except Bryconamericus terrabensis with 7-8 and B. arilepis with 9-10); 33-38 branched anal-fin rays (vs. 31 or fewer); 28-31 anterior anal-fin rays covered by a row of scales at their bases (vs. 4-26); presence of a wide anterior maxillary tooth, at least twice as wide as the posterior tooth, both of which are pentacuspid (vs. maxillary teeth of same size) (Ref. 93958).
