Etymology: Apristurus: a-, Latin privative, i.e., without; pristis, from pristes (Gr.), sawyer (but here meaning saw); oura (Gr.), tail, referring to absence of saw-toothed crest of enlarged dermal denticles along upper edge of caudal fin as found in the closely related Pristiurus (=Galeus). (See ETYFish);  sinensis: -ensis, suffix denoting place: Sinica (China), referring to its distribution in the South China Sea. (See ETYFish).

Northwest Pacific: known only from the type locality, the South China Sea (possibly off the Chinese coast). Presence in the Western Central Pacific is uncertain (Ref. 11146).

Known only from the holotype which was found at 537 m depth. Length is from an immature specimen, might reach at least 50 cm TL. Oviparous (Ref. 50449).
