Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Diagnosed from its congeners in Europe by having the following characters: 30-38 gill rakers; anal fin origin about 1-2½ scales behind base of last dorsal ray; 48-58 + 3 lateral line scales; anal fin with 12-15½ branched rays; ventral keel exposed for 2-5 scales in front of anus; caudal peduncle depth 2.0-2.1 times in its length (Ref. 59043).

Biology     Glossary (e.g. epibenthic)

A short-lived species which occurs in lakes and water courses on low plains, with little current. Adults feed on invertebrates and plants (Ref. 26100). Also feed on plankton. Form large schools during foraging. Represent the main prey of the breeding Dalmatian pelicans Pelecanus crispus. Spawn in tributaries and along shores on pebbles and gravel in surf zone. Undertake migration to spawning sites in tributaries at night (Ref. 59043). Threatened by water abstraction and the introduction of other species (Ref. 26100).

Estimates based on models

Phylogenetic diversity index (Ref. 82804):  PD50 = 0.5000   [Uniqueness, from 0.5 = low to 2.0 = high].
Bayesian length-weight: a=0.00661 (0.00314 - 0.01391), b=3.13 (2.96 - 3.30), in cm total length, based on LWR estimates for this Genus-body shape (Ref. 93245).
Trophic level (Ref. 69278):  2.7   ±0.29 se; based on food items.
Generation time: 2.9 ( na - na) years. Estimated as median ln(3)/K based on 2 growth studies.
Resilience (Ref. 120179):  Medium, minimum population doubling time 1.4 - 4.4 years (tmax=8; K=0.11).
Fishing Vulnerability (Ref. 59153):  Low vulnerability (14 of 100).
Price category (Ref. 80766):   Unknown.
