Etymology: Bathybagrus: Greek, bathys = deep + Greek, pagros = a fish (Dentex sp.) (Ref. 45335). More on author: Boulenger.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; demersal, usually 25 - 75 m (Ref. 36901). Tropical; 3°S - 9°S
Africa: known from Lake Tanganyika (Ref. 36901, 75075, 78218), affluent rivers (Ref. 93972) and the Lower Malagarasi River (Ref. 54847).
Size / Weight / Age
Maturity: Lm ?  range ? - ? cm
Max length : 23.0 cm SL male/unsexed; (Ref. 3236)
Present on the bottom of deep water to 150 m but most common in sub-littoral areas; very common in deep water (Ref. 4967). Specialized toward a life on the sandy bottoms (Ref. 6770). Upstream spawning migrations have been reported (Ref. 78218, 93972). Omnivore (Ref. 78218). Feeds on small fishes (usually Lamprologus spp.), ostracods, and larvae of dragonflies (Ref. 6868, 36901).
