Marine; demersal; depth range 6 - 40 m (Ref. 5299), usually 6 - 12 m (Ref. 5299). Temperate; 59°N - 27°N, 18°W - 28°E
Eastern Atlantic: Skagerrak to Madeira, including the Salvage Islands and Canary Islands. Also in the Mediterranean.

Cryptobenthic, found inshore, in or near crevices in vertical rock faces, rarely in deep lower tide-pools, to a depth of 40 m, usually between 6 to 12 m. Feed on crustaceans (copepods, amphipods, decapods), polychaetes, gastropods, algae (Ref. 4696). Spawns up to 12,000 eggs (Ref. 35388).
