Etymology: Pseudomystus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, mystax = whiskered, used by Belon in 1553 to describe all fishes with whiskers (Ref. 45335); nuchalis: Name 'nuchalis' from the Latin words 'nucha' meaning 'the nape of the neck', in reference to the nuchal concavity of this new species.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal soft rays: 9 - 11. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: colour pattern of pale yellow patches on the body; presence of nuchal concavity; snout 55-63% HL; adipose fin more anteriorly positioned relative to the anal fin (adipose-fin origin at vertical through anal-fin origin); presence of pale yellow patches on the body never coalescing to form irregular bands; absence of a supracleithral process; adipose fin with a base 13.2-19.0% SL, whose posterior insertion is separate from the dorsal procurrent caudalfin rays; nuchal
plate with straight or slightly convex margins; head 22.1-24.5% SL; and adipose-fin base 13.2-19.0% SL (Ref. 138063).
