Etymology: Garra: Name based on a vernacular Indian name (Hamilton, 1822:343, Ref. 1813); a fish living in mud (Ref. 128817); alticauda: Name 'alticuda from the Latin words 'altus' and 'cauda', meaning 'high' and 'tail', in allusion to the high caudal peduncle of the novel species. Noun in apposition.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 7; Anal soft rays: 5; Vertebrae: 36. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: well-developed mental adhesive disc present; scaleless region of the abdomen adjacent to the ventral midline extending midway to pelvic fin insertions; caudal peduncle depth 13.5-15.0, mean 14.0, % of SL; predorsal scales 0-5; interorbital space width 48.6-53.7, mean 50.1, % of HL; maxillary barbels than half of eye diameter; firinged distal margin of the rostral fold; indistinct black longitudinal band extending along the lateral line on the flank; mental adhesive disc densely papillated; four scale rows below the lateral line and absence of W-shaped black mark along lateral; subdistal margins of the caudal fin (Ref. 137635).
