Etymology: Propimelodus: Greek, pro = first, in front of + see under Pimelodus; lobatus: Name 'lobatus' from the Latin word 'lobus', meaning 'elongated projection', in reference to the characteristic lobe-like anal fin.

Dorsal spines (total): 1; Dorsal soft rays (total): 6; Anal spines: 3 - 4; Anal soft rays: 7 - 8; Vertebrae: 42 - 44. This species is distinguished by the following set of characters: eye diameter 20.6-24.8% HL, 45.3-56% SN and 114-153.1% NE; gill rakers on the first arch 30-34; presence of fleshy lobe in anal fin; total vertebrae count 42-44; absence of a black spot on dorsal fin; external mental barbel, surpassing the origin of the anal fin, and the lack of teeth on the metapterygoid; distance between anterior nostrils 12.8-14.9% HL (Ref. 137468).
