Etymology: Notacanthus: Greek, noton = back + Greek, akantha = thorn (Ref. 45335); arrontei: Named for Juan Carlos Arronte of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC), a long-time colleague and collaborator in numerous scientific surveys and taxonomic studies.

This species is distinguished by the following characters: head and body strongly compressed; mouth small and inferior; dorsal fin composed of short, isolated spines; long-based anal fin, grading from spines anteriorly to soft trays posteriorly; minute, adherent cycloid scales; small teeth on the premaxillae, palatines, and dentaries, none on the maxillae; gill membranes
united to each other and not connected to the isthmus by a frenum; gill rakers well-developed (Ref. 130977).
