Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335). More on author: Trewavas.
This species is placed in the genus Gaurochromis Greenwood, 1980 in Eschmeyer (CofF ver. Mar. 2011: Ref. 86697). We keep all the lacustrine and riverine "Haplochromine" species of the Lake Victoria catchment in the genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf ,1888 following Van Oijen et al. (1996: Ref. 12750), until a new complete taxonomic revision is published.
Environment: milieu / climate zone / depth range / distribution range
Freshwater; benthopelagic; depth range ? - 18 m (Ref. 4983), usually ? - 10 m (Ref. 4983). Tropical; 1°N - 3°S
Africa: Lake Victoria.

Occurs over shallow water with a soft mud bottom. A few specimens have been caught over sand (Ref. 4983). Feeds mainly on insects (esp. larval Diptera) and mollusks ( particularly the bivalve Corbicula, although some gastropods like Melanoides are also eaten (Ref. 558).
